April is 'Alcohol Awareness Month.' - but every day, every minute counts when it comes to youth understanding the risks and consequences of underage drinking
Here are the cold hard, sobering facts about underage drinking in Connecticut
- the consumption of alcoholic beverages by persons who are under the legal age to drink such beverages is a critical health and safety issue in this nation and Connecticut
- a higher percentage of youth aged 12 to 20 use alcohol than tobacco or illicit drugs, making underage drinking a leading public health problem in the United States.
- alcohol-related traffic crashes remain the single greatest cause of death among youth and young adults;
- the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reports children who begin drinking alcohol before age 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol problems as adults than those who start after age 21;
- these young people are more likely to be involved in binge drinking, drunk driving, date rape and teen pregnancies;
- more than 1 in 5, 12-20 year olds in Connecticut report Binge Drinking in the past month according to state estimates from the 2002 and 2003 National Survey of Drug Use;
- Information on underage drinking is readily available to you via organizations like the Department of Mental Health and Addition Services, your local schools, your local hospitals, your local youth groups.

SAMHSA has completely updated, revised, and redesigned one of its most popular educational brochures, formerly called "Tips for Teens: About Alcohol." The new 2008 pre-publication edition of "Underage Drinking: Myths vs. Facts" is now available here for viewing, downloading, and printing.
HOT 93.7 is doing its part to help kids get the word out to other kids that underage drinking is risky. We got out on the streets and into some really great town hall meetings to get with kids that wanted to shout out about staying away from alcohol.
